As the weeks drag on and we collectively continue to be forced to stay inside and stew on the apocalyptic state of the world, an interesting phenomenon has sprung up. I’ve observed in general that lockdown seems to have made people into the purest versions of themselves (not always good) and in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty that means… performative wellness! Yay!
My own experiences are not (surprising absolutely nobody) in line with the barrage of instagram-ready internet people who were suspiciously quick to show off how beautiful their workspaces are, how delicious their banana bread is (no hate here, love a bit of cake - it’s cake); their amazing yoga practices and various other frustratingly deliberately aspirational aspects of their new lives. Although I (at least post-illness) have experienced the hopeful burst that comes with finally having the opportunity to get some sleep, having cut a 3-hour round-trip out of my day, these are usually followed with extremely low lows (we’ll get into that later).
So… I’m going to be starting a new series that I’m calling Jekyll and Hyde (for… obvious reasons). Any true reflection of a lockdown (or just human) experience is littered with good and bad bits and (at least for me) it’s far more soothing to hear about both. So… watch this space!
