I'm all about True Crime and after having dealt with the comedies here are a couple of more serious (and arguably more respectful) offerings:
THE SERIOUS ONES
CRIMINAL
Criminal is an amazing podcast presented (rather earnestly) by Phoebe Judge. It is probably best described as a documentary series and delves into a varied selection of (you guessed it) crime.
For me personally, the most difficult episodes to listen to are the episodes which deal with jim crow era hate crimes but, since a lot of them had been almost completely ignored at the time, they are a worthy listen.
Episode to try: no spoilers here but the recent episode “Money Tree” has me open mouthed (and no murder involved).
SWORD AND SCALE
Sword and Scale. Oh Sword and Scale. This one’s on the “mankind’s dark spirit” end of things. I’ve been truly shocked by a lot of these and I have to say, there have been periods where I’ve not been able to listen to it…
This is arguably the most in-depth of the podcasts and definitely does not take the view that we’re great as a species…
Episode to try: Episode 63 – a seemingly perfect family in Utah (I mean, do these people really seem all that perfect anymore?) is rocked by the apparent drowning of the mother….
There are others, of course, but these are my key to true crime podcasting. Get listening!
