2018 has NOT been an amazing year for me so far. Suffice it to say that my white blood cells are not showing to their best and I’m on cold/flu number 5. It’s March. SO, while I’m stuck in bed like consumption-riddled Victorian, I’ve been doing a deep-dive tv-wise. As my gift to you guys, here’s my list of the top 5 shows I’m most looking forward to. 2018 has GOT to start looking up.
1. Unreal (Season 3)
It is no secret that I love Unreal. Ostensibly about the behind-the-scenes goings on at a “Bachelor”-style reality TV dating show, it is really about two female antiheroes with varying commitments to their decision to break bad. As crazy as their actions seem at times (read: most of the time), it’s really refreshing to see two intelligent women given the space to be terrible on long-form television. You don’t have to be a fan of ABC’s various Bachelor Nation shows to appreciate this show, but if you are… it’s bonus.
The other bonus of this show is that you can watch series 1 and 2 on Amazon Prime while you wait for series 3 to finish airing if your patience has been completely erased by the demon Netflix.
Series 3 has already started and the first two episodes are on Amazon Prime – get on it!
2. Archer (Season 9)
It is no secret that I bloody love [Sterling Mallory] Archer. Old Duchess has had me hooked since the very beginning. Although it’s not likely that the halcyon days of the (Isis – awkward…) spy agency may be in the past, I for one am completely behind whatever those geniuses will give me. (Disclaimer for existing fans: I loved Archer: Vice and thought Archer: Dreamland had some very high highs so your mileage may vary on this recommendation,..)
The new series is again set in (spoiler: alert) Archer’s unconsciousness – yes – he’s still in that coma… and will place our crazy band of former-agents in Danger Island (think Arch of Darkness but Krieger’s a wise-cracking parrot!)
If for some ungodly reason you don’t watch Archer, who hurt you? It’s all on Netflix. Stop reading this and go watch it. Then come back and read some more articles…
Archer, Series 9 premiers on 25th April 2018
3. Jessica Jones (Season 2)
Whenever I read that strong female protagonists are very “in” at the moment, I want to be sick. I have every episode of Xena on DVD (I’m old, what do you want?) so you know that I know that strong women couldn’t be further from a fad. Jessica Jones, season 1 was an iconic portrayal of a woman who, despite having super strength, has been mentally broken by the varied and torturous traumas she has experienced in her life. Having wrapped up some of her demons by the end of the first series, I couldn’t be more excited to see what’s coming in her second outing.
I have to add that it’s not all doom and gloom and Jessica almost single-handedly saved The Defenders. If you like your super heroes to be well-written and interesting (or you character studies to come with a side of comic book-action) this is the series for you. I’m psyched.
Jessica Jones series 3 drops on Netflix on 7th March 2018
4. Final Space
We actually have a NEW series here! Final Space is an animated sci-fi series from Olan Rogers which follows Gary (an astronaut) and his sidekick Mooncake (who also happens to be the cutest planet-destroyer I’ve ever seen – sorry Billie Piper!). As a fan of both Futurama and Rick and Morty – I’ve been excited about this show starting for a very long time. From the trailer, this show looks like a combination of all the greats, with a heaping helping of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy thrown in to the mix.
The first two episodes of Final Space are already available online!
5. The Americans (Season 6)
Now, I have watched and loved a LOT of tv. I’m the kind of Basic Nerd B*tch who is STILL hoping that the gods of time and space can make a miracle happen and I’ll get to see how Firefly turned out. I watched Battlestar Gallactica from the beginning and have seen all of Breaking Bad a couple of times. Why is any of this relevant, you ask? Well, I want you to understand that I know what great TV looks like. I need you to know that, so when I say that The Americans is perhaps the best television EVER, you’ll know that I’m serious.
Philip and Elizabeth (not them) are a hard-working couple and parents to two children living in Washington DC. They are deep-cover KGB. The question is, are they also Americans?
Series 6 starts 28th March 2018 – catch up on the rest on Amazon Prime. You will NOT regret it.
So, there you go! I'm basically dying so I'm going back to bed.
God speed.
